AZ Governor feels the pressure from everyone weighing in on SB 1070

LatinaLista — Today, leaders from national civil rights organizations gathered together for a press conference call to 1) voice their opposition to Arizona SB 1070 and 2) urge Arizona Governor Brewer not to sign it into law — they are not the only ones.

To say that the governor is feeling a little pressured to not sign SB 1070 is an understatement.

Arizonans ask Gov. Brewer to veto SB 1070.

In addition to the petitions that have been delivered to the governor’s office, phone calls received and outright condemnation of the bill from religious organizations, immigrant advocacy groups and those Latinos who care about the issue, it was reported yesterday that several people have called on Brewer not to sign the bill into law: New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley, Maricopa County GOP Chairman Don Stapley and the latest is from the Progressive States Action organization, a non-partisan org that supports the work of progressive state legislators around the country:

Today, Progressive States Action and State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy, a group of state legislators committed to supporting comprehensive immigration reform that reflects our core values as a nation, released the following statement in response to the passage of Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070:

“Progressive States Action and State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy are deeply distressed by the passage of SB 1070 by the Arizona legislature. Passed by the State Senate and presented to Governor Brewer just three days ago, SB 1070 will hurt all Arizona residents. We urge all state legislators concerned with immigration policy to avoid following Arizona’s example, and call on Governor Brewer to veto the bill.”

Everyone is scratching their heads as to what it will take to make Gov. Brewer see the reality of this bill. Sometimes, that kind of perspective needs to come from an unlikely source:

    I think that wwhat the governer of Arizona and the president of these United States it hurting the people around us and it is the biggest stupidity that i have ever heard of. This law should be Vetod as soon as possible…
    When this law passes There will be massive distruction.
    I dont see why she is the Governer if she is the one who put the state of Arizona in debt.. Its Fashionism because just the fact that she helped Obama campagne is the on;y reason she got to be the Governer..

    Mr. Obama said the Arizona bill threatens “to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”
    Umm, 1st the gov needs to gain the trust of law abiding citizens by enforcing laws against law breakers. After that, the police can work on gaining the trust of criminals… Is Obama REALLY this stupid or does he just pretend?

    Actually joew, laws do have to meet basic notions of fairness, as Obama said. Or it’s just fascism.

    What exactly about SB 1070 is unfair, arturo, since it merely mimics Federal Law? The States do have the ability to discriminate against those that are here based on status. Why else do you think the US Constitution states: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
    Legal immigrants are deprived of certain liberties until they become citizens, and the States deprive them of certain benefits until they become citizens. So I ask what is unfair about SB 1070?

    Fair is to give legal status to these people who have done a lot of good for this country. Does SB 1070 do that, give these hardworking people green cards? I don’t think so. Therefore, it is unfair.
    But even if it did, it would be inappropriate for the Police to be giving out green cards: we don’t live in a police state. SB 1070 is fascist and it must be stopped.
