TULSA, Oklahoma – A group of Hispanic students at The University of Tulsa have created a diversity council to promote higher education among local minorities and young people with low income, according to group member Kasey Hughart, a sociology student and president of DREAM Act Oklahoma.

Hughart said the group’s immediate goal is “to provide information to parents about the process of applying for college.” The group also plans to “adopt a local high school and focus our energy into encouraging more minorities to enter college.”

The number of international students at the University of Tulsa is significant, Eleazar Palomo, a council member, said in an e-mail message.

“I believe TU has a very diverse environment,” Palomo wrote. “I think that is one reason as to why the school is so great.”

Palomo is the first in his family to go to college, which is why the council has special meaning for him, he said.
