Spotlight Non-profit: Granting prom dress wishes to underprivileged girls

LatinaLista — With the tagline, “We provide everything but the date,” The Fairy Godmother Project, based in Houston, Texas, grants the wishes of underprivileged high school senior girls and boys with the one thing that would prevent them from attending their class prom — prom dresses and tuxedos.

The Fairy Godmother Project of Houston was started in 2000 as a grass roots organization to help students in the Houston area who cannot afford to purchase a prom dress or tux. Each year, hundreds of students in the Houston area are provided with free prom and graduation dresses and tuxedos.

Volunteers act as personal shoppers for the girls helping them choose their dresses — one prom dress and two dresses for graduation — as well as, accessories to go with the dresses, and hair and make-up tips.

The boys are given vouchers for a free tux rental.

The highlight of the organization is the once-a-year prom dress shopping spree where those students accepted into The Fairy Godmother Project are helped by volunteers in finding that one dress that will live forever in pictures of the special night.

The program relies on donations of either gently used prom dresses or items that can be selected for accessories like jewelry, hair accessories, perfumes, hair products, evening bags, etc. and cash donations that are needed to buy larger size dresses or to rent tuxes.

Prom is a tradiational event for American high school students. Every student should have the opportunity to attend prom regardless of their personal or financial background.
