Spotlight Nonprofit: Creating special birthday cakes for kids facing adult challenges

LatinaLista — For a child, there is only one day all year that is special — their birthday. But these are tough times and for too many families birthday parties, complete with pretty cakes are just not in the family budget.

That’s where Sweet Blessings comes in.

Based in Lexington, Kentucky, volunteer chefs get together to create one-of-a-kind birthday cakes for children 5-14 year olds who are either living in poverty or facing a life threatening illness.

Each cake is created especially for the child, incorporating the child’s favorite colors, hobbies, sports teams, etc. The volunteers not only make and decorate the cakes but they deliver it as well.

Sweet Blessings is a Christian-based organization. In addition to receiving a cake, each child is prayed for by one of the volunteers and receives a birthday card with a Bible verse.

Sweet Blessings has delivered cakes to children in all different difficult situations. There was a young boy living in a youth shelter; a very ill child whose goal was to live to her next birthday; a girl who had been collecting aluminum cans to cash in and buy her own birthday cake and many homeless children.

When the children receive their cakes, the Sweet Blessings volunteers know they accomplished their mission — creating a happy birthday for all children.
