Latino online visionaries to be recognized at official Latino SXSW Interactive event

LatinaLista — SXSW has evolved into one of the premier seen-and-be-seen events in the country. The only problem was Latinos, as an organized group, were barely seen at all. That changed last year when Austin-based Cultural Strategies launched The Social Revolución during SXSW Interactive.

Described as “an interactive movement of Latinos using social media to create change,” the event focused on recognizing those within the online Latino community who were the visionaries and changemakers of the time. Over 140 nominations were entered and seven winners selected. From Maria Teresa Kumar of Voto Latino to the social activist musical group Calle 13 to artist/political cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, each honoree epitomized the growing trend among Latinos of taking action and creating change.

The buzz and excitement created by this inaugural event extended well beyond Austin — and into 2013.

It’s no big sorpresa that as SXSW draws near so does the second installment of the Social Revolución. However, the success of the only official Latino event of SXSW Interactive hinges on finding and recognizing the innovative, courageous and compassionate Latinos and Latinas making a difference for all gente.

Nominations are now open for the Social Revolución awards to be announced at this year’s SXSW Interactive. There are three categories for nominations:

The New Americano — using social media to create cultural shifts

The Mobilizer — spreading news of causes and campaigns

El Innovator — unique use of technology to make a difference.

Chances are we all know of someone or an organization that deserves to be applauded for their hard work that, in many cases, goes unrecognized. Just as they are making a difference, we can all make a difference ourselves by being aware of who these people and organizations are and sharing news about them.

Deadline for nominations is midnight on February 25, 2013.

Editor’s note: Latina Lista is a proud partner in The Social Revolución.
