Video: Online campaign Global Mom Relay culminates with interactive UN conference celebrating mothers everywhere

LatinaLista — Mothers are too often the unsung heroes of not just their families but everywhere a need for a voice or helping hand was answered by ‘someone’s mom’. The important role of moms is never fully appreciated, regardless of whether they live in bustling cities or remote rural areas, developed countries or third-world regions.

Yet, on May 8, the first-ever interactive conference will be held dedicated to these women who are the backbones of their families and communities. Mom+Social is the culmination of the 60-day Global Mom Relay online campaign that began in March on International Women’s Day. The Global Mom Relay was in support of the Every Woman Every Child movement, launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, whose goal is to save the lives of 16 million women and children by 2015.

The Mom+Social conference highlights “motherhood and the role of social media, technology, and philanthropy to improve the health of moms and children everywhere” by bringing together notable women from around the world to share their insights. Since social media is a major component of the conference’s discussion, it will be livestreamed via the conference’s Facebook page and tweeted under the hashtag #globalmom.

Actress/singer Jennifer Lopez and her sister Lynda Lopez, a journalist, are co-founders of the Lopez Foundation, as well as, co-chairs of the Global Mom Relay. For the campaign, the two sisters shared the best advice they received from their mother, what hopes they have for their children and the most valuable advice they would share with other mothers.
