Video: Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood learns how to fight back against rising neighborhood violence

LatinaLista — The history of the city of Chicago seems to have always been intertwined with violence. The 21st Century is no different. During this year’s Fourth of July holiday weekend, the city recorded nine people killed by gun violence and another 60 wounded. The trend continued the following weekend with three people killed.

For the most part, the perpetrators are gang members, many younger than the legal age to drive. Their youth, hot-headed immaturity and careless handling of weapons make them walking time-bombs who are too intent on establishing street cred that they don’t care who gets caught in their crossfire.

Their behavior puts whole communities at risk. One Chicago organization, The Resurrection Project, recently spearheaded a community-wide awareness event to show how the city’s Pilsen community can fight back against the violence threatening their children, seniors and neighborhood security.
