Undocumented students in over 28 states stage events to let Washington know USA is their home

LatinaLista — If you should see a group of students picketing, marching, hosting petition tables or gathering for a rally today, you might want to join them.

Today is the national Back to School DREAM Act Day of Action when undocumented students and their supporters in over 28 states will host more than 120 events to support legislation that would allow these children, who grew up in this country and for all practical purposes are “American,” to attend college, serve their nation, and attain legal status.
From a petition drive at UC Berkeley to a Mass and rally at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, FL to a large assembly outside Sen. Schumer’s offices in NYC to a press conference at Dallas City Hall in Dallas, TX to a forum event at the University of Michigan to a play staged about the life of a “Dreamer” at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, and in hundreds of towns and cities in between, DREAM Act students and supporters are on a mission — to raise awareness of the issue.
The waste this country commits by denying these children the opportunity to pursue meaningful education and applying those skills in jobs that can help our economy is beyond rational reason.
It’s time to recognize the fact that a huge injustice is being committed against these children who had no choice in the decision where to start a new life but have made the choice that they want to stay in the only country they know they have a future.
