Intrn’l Video: Deciphering the mysterious language of Chile’s Atacama Desert

LatinaLista — The most famous example of geoglyphs in South America is found in Peru on the Nazca plain. Yet, South America is rich with examples of other types of glyphs that can be seen on the faces of cliffs, cave walls and desert regions.

One of the most fascinating examples of South American geoglyphic art can be found in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Located on the Pacific coast, west of the Andes mountains, it is said to be the driest desert in the world. The desert is home to over 5,000 geoglyphs that date back from 1000 to 1400 CE.

El Salar de Pintados is the site of Chile’s oldest geoglyphs. Like the Nazca lines, theories as to why they were created are the subject of academic debate, speculation and documentaries.
