Video: Cuban-American filmmaker creates ‘visual conversation’ in award-winning video art short

LatinaLista — The topic of ‘identity’ is a popular one in literature and film. A new documentary that explores the age-old issue combines poetry and film to produce a piece that is already garnering many kudos and distinctions.

SHIFT, a 5-minute short, is comprised of over 10,000 photographs taken over a year and a half. Created as a “visual conversation” between artist/filmmaker Juan Carlos Zaldivar from Cuba and sculptor Anja Marais of South Africa, the film “follows the life of a character who is born from a tree and whose face is stolen by a wild dog. After wandering the landscape reflecting its environment, looking for home, the character’s vision returns in an unsuspecting turn of events.”

Rife with symbolism and artistry, the film stands out for its stunning images and unique storyline so much that the film is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami. In September, the film won both the Jury and the Audience awards in the museum’s video art competition, the first time any submission won both awards in the competition’s 14-year history.
