LatinaLista — Last year, Dr. Viviana Hurtado and Monica “Mommy Maestra” Olivera of Latinas for Latino Lit (L4LL) broke ground by launching the first-ever online Latino children’s summer reading program. Concerned about the poor literacy rates among Latino children and the fact that many Latino parents want their children to connect with their cultural roots, the duo worked at providing a list of titles featuring English, Spanish and bilingual stories to the children enrolled in the program.
This year, L4LL is taking the online summer reading program for 6-12-year-olds to the next level by creating a companion “DIY” summer reading camp in both English and Spanish.
The 10-week L4LL DIY Summer Reading Camp,which started June 1, is a subscription-based premium program which, in addition to the reading program’s book list, includes over 100 printable activity sheets that fit with each week’s theme and were developed to boost literacy and writing skills.
The premium subscription also includes printable bilingual “reading passports” where children can record the books they’ve read and which are used towards the prizes the summer reading program offers. Also, those who sign up for the DIY summer reading camp get a code to download four free e-books from Qlovi, an online eReading and writing platform.

However, families can still enjoy participating in the 2014 L4LL Latino Children’s Summer Reading Program at no cost and can download book lists, reading logs, a pledge and a certificate of completion to keep their children motivated and reading throughout the summer.
