Argentina online project strives to create “The World Forest”

LatinaLista — Whether it’s referred to as “global warming” or “global climate change,” there’s no denying (anymore) that the climate on our planet is changing. The clues come with each season draught in some parts of the world, floods in others; record heat waves in the summer and record snowfalls in the winter; tornado outbreaks that don’t just produce one or two twisters but produce a series of 14-16 at one time.

Combine climate change with human action and it’s a recipe for speeding the depletion of our natural resources — clean water, breathable air, forests, etc.

Some people around the world are concerned about the state of the planet’s natural resources, namely the forests, and have decided to do something about it — plant trees to create The World Forest.

The World Forest is planned for Pategonia, Argentina.

Pategonia was chosen as the site for several reasons:

  • Patagonia already suffers the consequences of human activities.
  • Desertification is increasing in the region.
  • There is suitable land available for forestry.

The creators of the project envision “The World Forest” to be a global nature preserve where anyone, wherever they live, can contribute — via the internet.

Twenty dollars will buy a single tree through the organization’s web site. The tree will be planted in the reserve and a certificate acknowledging the buyer as part of the program will be delivered, along with, photographs of the tree, its GPS coordinates and regular email updates on the progress of the tree’s growth.

In times like these, which require action and change at a global level, it is essential to our active participation as people of the World, to encourage and develop strategies and projects to generate environmental behaviour change in society. There is no better example of participation and commitment than this project. The World Forest project
