Local high school senior builds internet radio following and helps children get a smile

SAN ANTONIO — David Gonzalez, 17, loves to play basketball. But on Sept 15 last year, he decided to quit playing.”I was the athlete in the family, but I wasn’t getting enough playing time. It was getting frustrating, so I stopped,” he explained.

By December, another of his passions, smooth jazz, took over. “My Dad mentioned that internet radio was booming – he said, ‘you love smooth jazz, why don’t you start your own station?'”

JD Gonzalez, David’s father, has been in the radio industry for years, and David paid attention. These days, the high school senior spends about five hours a day working on his smooth jazz internet radio station instead of shooting hoops.

“Smooth jazz is a mix of hip hop, pop and R & B, and young people in San Antonio love it,” David said.

By July 31, David, now the youngest smooth jazz radio station owner around, launched his own brand. His Internet radio station Smooth Wave Jazz is available 24/7 at http://www.smoothwavejazz.com.

David wears all the hats in his new enterprise, from managing the business to actually programming the music. Things are moving along so well, he plans to start live broadcasts as soon as November or December, he said.
