LatinaLista — One of the best ways to broaden someone’s horizons, a.k.a. expose them to situations outside their comfort zones, is through travel.
It is one of the reasons why students who have experienced life in another country are better prepared to view the world with an open mind. Yet, in these times, traveling may be too cost prohibitive for most students to afford — unless they win the “Destino: Latinoamericano” contest sponsored by Continental Airlines and Adelante! U.S. Education Leadership Fund.
MarÃa Cristina Osorio, Continental Airlines’ manager of Public Relations for Latin America and U.S. Latino, awards last year’s Destino: Latinoamericano winner Carlos Blanco of Houston, Texas.
The contest is open to Latino college students who must write a 200-300-word essay either in English or Spanish explaining “Latin America’s impact on U.S. culture and society.”
First prize is four Continental Airlines tickets for any Continental destination in the continental U.S., Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean; second prize is two tickets. The first-place essay will be posted on Adelante’s web site.
Continental also will provide tickets for several Adelante scholarship winners to attend Adelante’s Leadership Institute.
Contest deadline is May 1, 2009 but there are certain guidelines that students must meet before submitting an essay:
1. Must have a 3.0 grade point average
2. Any major is eligible
3. Must be a student of Hispanic descent enrolled in a college or university
4. Must be a legal U.S. resident
Along with the essay, students must submit a cover letter with name, address, telephone, college name, major, date of graduation, proof of enrollment and GPA.
Either e-mail the essay, cover letter and proof of enrollment to: sramos@adelantefund.org or mail them to:
