Video: Docu-Series examines Latino identity among Afro-Latinos

LatinaLista — The struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history are well-documented. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about blacks in Latin America. In many cases, blacks south of the U.S. border have been rendered socially invisible and are still the focus of racist jokes in their respective countries.

Because of this pervasive treatment and attitude — of being treated like outsiders in their own society — many struggle with their identity. Are they black or Latino?

It's a question that one new documentary series hopes to answer, or at least provide some insight.

Negro — A Docu-Series about Latino Identity showcases the feelings and experiences of those who self-identify as Afro-Latinos. Thirty video shorts comprise the compilation of experiences — from the U.S., Colombia, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Peru, Panama and Costa Rica — focusing on individual stories who found their identity via hardships, isolation from other Latinos, colorism, pain, love and connection.

This docu-series explores the history and present attitudes of race, color, self-identification and social interaction among Latinos from Latinos themselves. Through candid interviews you will see the good, the bad, the ugly and the absolute beauty of Latinos’ perceptions of their culture.

The finished film is available in DVD format.
