LatinaLista — What if there was one place where at the click of a mouse you could immediately access audio, video and written documentation of the evolving history and culture of the Latino population in the United States?
As you may have guessed, there is such a place now!
It’s called Latinoteca the World of Latino Culture and Arts. It’s the brainchild of the University of Houston and Arte Publico Press.
The site provides free, downloadable files that lets researchers, teachers, students and anyone interested in learning about the U.S. Latino journey to read, hear and see for themselves what it took to achieve the gains all Latino enjoy today. The site also provides links to outside credible sources carefully screened by the site’s editors.
Another noteworthy focus of the site is the celebration of Hispanic journalism.
Voices for Justice is the web page for the project to celebrate the bicentennial of Hispanic/Latino journalism in the United States, offering a complete history and bibliography of periodicals published up to 1960, a timeline and a calendar of events, as well as links to screened and authenticated web pages on the history of the Latino press and media.
By virtue of Arte Publico’s partnership/sponsorship in the project, readers can expect to find that the recommended titles about the history and culture of Latinos are publications by Arte Publico, and, as to be expected, are available to buy through the site.
Also, it’s noticed that the homepage is used for news about Arte Publico’s authors, book signing events and new releases.
Luckily, however, Arte Publico has been a good overall steward of Latino culture and history. And while the site should only be considered a small portion of the vast documented history that hopefully exists in this country, it is a good beginning to put the U.S. Latino experience in perspective for posterity.
