El Paso’s Day of the Dead Poster Shows Washington that Border Wall is Not a Dead Issue

LatinaLista — Today most Latino families are celebrating a very special observance: Day of the Dead.
It is a celebration where families come together to remember their loved ones who have passed away with special homemade altars, traditional foods and family picnics at the family cemetery.
This year, one Texas border city wanted to show Homeland Security that no border wall will come between two sister cities who proclaim they will stand together — Forever.

(Source: The Forma Group)

The bond between the two sister border cities of El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico goes waaaay back.
The stories of how the lives of each city’s residents intertwine with some working and going to school in one city and living across the border in the other is representative of what happens all along the Texas-Mexico border.
Whereas our federal government is just now striking up partnerships with Mexico to help in combatting crime and drug trafficking, the city governments of El Paso and Juarez have always been there to support one another in times of crisis and celebration.
This time is no different.
From a “culture cruise” which is an organized tour of museums in El Paso to the creation of the “bones market” that serves as an opportunity for artisans from both sides of the border to showcase and sell their handiworks to a film fest and cultural festival, the three-day celebration is being used by city government officials to make a statement to Washington that a border wall is not needed nor wanted.
El Paso business owner, Roberto Reyes, the creator of the poster for the event, told Latina Lista that when city officials described what they were looking for in the depiction of the poster, the words “sister cities” were repeated throughout the conversaton.
“The image of the sister skeletons immediately came into my mind,” said Roberto.
Though the concept is a way of life for El Paso and Juarez and countless other cities and towns along the U.S.- Mexico border, Washington still has a hard time wrapping their minds around that relationship.
But it doesn’t matter to border residents. They’ll keep the issue alive and not bury it until Washington understands that sisters are family and families don’t build walls between each other.

I have the solution. Lets annex El Paso to Mexico then. If the citizens of El Paso are more concerned about their “sister” across the border, then the national security of their own country, then lets not keep the sisters separated anymore. Let them join forever together. I hope the store does hit them in behind when they leave us.

sick, you are correct. Your example is one where all the criminal element plus all the crooked police should be lined up and shot. They have victims on both sides of the border and are scum. The failed ‘war on drugs’ that we have spent so much hard earned money on has done nothing to stop the market in the US for these criminals. A few years ago, it was nice to go dancing and dinner in Nuevo Laredo. The criminals just became bold as the drug routes further north and west were curtailed and the worse of the criminal element came togeter in south Texas to supply the growing US market. Supply and demand economics rearing their ugly side.
El Paso and Juarez have drug problems but for the most part hey kill their own there. Not like Nuevo Laredo where the public is fair game.
freak, I am with you on this one, shoot them all. Enforce the anti-drug laws in the US and dry up this black eye of American life.

frank you normally post some pretty stupid ideas so you were bound to get one right. I like your idea of keeping the sisters together but I would like to see us annex Juarez into the US. We did once in LBJ days when we poured a new river and exchanged land with Mexico. Let us just redirect the river further south this time and take in Juarez. Problem solved.
    Way to go frank.

I just love El Paso. Isn’t that where Mexicans cross the border and sponge off U.S. hospitals for obstetrics and birthing care, all the while gleefully proclaiming that its so nice of the U.S. to foot the bill? Isn’t that where the hospitals are under a threat of going bankrupt due to this free care? Yeah, such a nice sister, Juarez! With relatives like that, El Paso would have been better off to have been an only child.

Miguel and Diana Jo, I rest my case: From Hispanic Tips
    http://www.hispanictips.com/2007/11/02/battling-latino-teen-pregnancy-teen-pregnancy-rates-decreased-percent-blacks-whites-1990s-compared-just-percent-latinas-according-groups-research/
Battling Latino Teen Pregnancy – Teen pregnancy rates decreased 29 percent for blacks and whites in the 1990s, compared to just 19 percent for Latinas, according to one group’s research
“Along with many of her Latina friends at her middle school in Southeast Washington, D.C., three years ago Beverly Zeleya treated sex lightly. No one told her about contraception, so she didn’t use it. As a result, she wound up pregnant and had a baby boy at the age of 13. Now in high school and a good deal wiser, she observes the same reckless behavior among her peers there. Many attend “skipping parties”—as in skipping school—where they shed their inhibitions with the help of alcohol, pot and other drugs and hook up with guys who are usually older than they are. “If the girl likes the guy, they will hang out with them and they don’t think twice,” says Zeleya. “They just think once.”
That despairing portrait is no aberration. Though teen pregnancy rates are declining generally, they remain stubbornly high for Latinas and blacks. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, 51 percent of Latina teens become pregnant at least once before reaching 20—a full 20 points higher than the national average. While that figure is still lower than the 58-percent rate for African-Americans, it’s declining at a considerably slower pace: teen pregnancy rates decreased 29 percent for blacks and whites in the 1990s, compared to just 19 percent for Latinas. Part of the reason: current educational programs aimed at the Hispanic community are failing to connect culturally, say Bill Albert and Ruthie Flores of the National Campaign’s Latino Initiative, which was launched this spring. Their project seeks to bridge the divide with a recently completed educational manual—the first of its kind—that will be distributed to schools, community groups and health clinics across the country in November.”*

DJ, almost forgot about your comment about my glorious state of Texas being stolen. If I recall correctly there was a war and afterwards the territory that is now Texas was purchased from Mexico for several million U.S. dollars. I know, someone, somewhere could show you a bill of sale and all legally above board; 100% legit.
If we could get past what happened, or didn’t happen, to our ancestors over 100 years ago, we can better concentrate on how to resolve the issues that effect us today. We can’t change the past and the future depends on level headed people making the right decisions today.
What I’ve said before is I am on this blog to observe these issues from both sides in order to better understand and try to add my opinions without attacking anyone on a personal level, except for the “toilet mouth” thing.

  • Horace

    EOT,
If Mexico still had Texas, the people who lived there would still be crossing our common border to look for work. It’s not which country owns Texas that matters, but the kind of government that rules. Who would you rather be, a Mexican under the Mexican government, or one under the U.S? The people of Mexico have voted on that issue with their feet. The difference between the U.S. and Mexico is our cultures, our governments and our sense of social justice, all of which are within the power of the people of the democracy of Mexico to do. It’ll never happen, as the people of Mexico do not have the will to make the necessary changes, and our government hasn’t the will to force the changes by closing our borders, an act that would keep the pressure on. Illegal alien advocates are the enablers that keep 80 million people in Mexico in poverty.

That has rings of Hitler to it, don’t you think? Are you a fan of Hitler? That was his agenda. He was a racist with an agenda to take over other countries by his own kind. Not my hero thats for sure!

miguel, what kind of a reply was that to my question? Where in my remarks does it show I have some kind of brain damage? Is this another deversive tactic of the pro-illegals to not answer a question?
Hitler was a racist. He thought the White race was superior, therefore he sought to invade other’s countries and take them over. I think that was appalling. The reconquistas in this country are seeking to do the same thing. Illegal immigration is helping to increase their numbers to achieve this goal. Therefore they are more dangerous than plain old racists without an agenda like that.

  • miguel
    November 7, 2007 at 6:08 am

frank…If you want to make arguments against ‘reconquista’ view, go to their sites or blogs. What are you doing by bringing up your views of them here? So you think hitler was a racist. I think he was racist plus the spawn of satan over that.
It seems that you are losing track of who or what you hate. Try ‘the rule of law’, ‘what part of illegal don’t you understand’, your old mantra. Keep your twisted logic with your hate groups but out of this blog.
Now I probably get to hear your,”Who made you a mod…” remark.

  • Frank

Miguel, there are a couple of members in this blog that have stated that they are reconquistas by their words. I am not losing track of anything. You just don’t like it being brought up because you know it is true, thats all. I don’t “hate” anyone. But I am opposed to illegal immigration and those who support it and especially those who support it because they seek to reconquer the southwest in that manner. Twisted logic? What twisted logic? Everything I have stated is a fact and the reconquista agenda is related to illegal immigration for many who advocate it.

  • miguel

The REAL reconquista is occuring in Native American Lands-
    It’s called Natural Law.
The indians in the United States cannot forget what was dealt to them with the Military tactics of the USA.(THE BLANKETS RIDDLED WITH POX AND THE LONG WALKS AND THE DESECRATION OF SACRED SITES…
Right now in Native North America the word is out that Homeland Security is at it again with a new twist- calling IT iLLEGAL immigration! It does not take a rocket scientist to inform REAL humans of the inhumane tactics involved in the enforcement of the rule of law.
Get a grip of yourselves upholders of the rule of law-NATURAL LAW IS GONNA WHIP YOU.
tHE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF the aMERICAS are fed up! We are all related and therefore we agree that human movement cannot be interrupted-not with militarised tact! At the rate things are going Homeland Security needs to pull out or be faced with grave consequence for the hundreds of deaths at the border due to the stupid tactics that forced humans into death traps through the deserts.
The border Patrol is using lame tactics instituted by Homeland Security to occupy Native American Land-again.
Time to smell the fry-bread big wigs!

  • Frank
    November 12, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Uh, the blankets riddled with pox were brought here by the Spaniards. You know, those ancestors of the Mestizos of today.
Again, I ask you why is it ok for Mexico to have immigration laws but not the U.S. These deaths are caused by those who risk their lives foolishly, not the U.S. No one is forcing the illegals to come here.
If you have a problem with the treaties that were signed long ago, monies that passed hands to acquire certain lands and wars that were fought to gain control of certain lands, why don’t you take it up with the U.S. government and stop beating up on regular American citizens that were born here and weren’t even alive when these things occured. You weren’t alive then either so what is your beef?
