Video: Contemporary dance troupe creates new ‘spin’ on meaning of Dec. 21, 2012

LatinaLista — With less than two weeks until the end of the Mayan calendar (Dec. 21, 2012), every imaginable form of media has been used to comment on the day. From film to music and jewelry to pop art, op-eds and books, the topic has proven to be a fertile source for creative minds.

Now comes a new expression — dance — that doesn’t just comment but ’embodies’ what many feel will really happen on Dec. 21, 2012. The Piel Morena Contemporary Dance in Chicago, a company that focuses on Latino inspired works, see the Mayan Calendar symbolizing a spiritual awakening that will happen within each human being.

A part of that awakening is achieving a balance of the seven Chakras found in each person. Through their passionate execution and imaginative use of sound, the dancers take viewers back to the time of the Mayas when nature was a part of life and not treated as a recreational activity.

The name of the piece is “Siete” and according to the dance company, it “is the exploration of the internal state and personal practice to achieve cleansing and balance of the seven Chakras. Siete takes the audience on a journey of raw narrative motion and magnificent composition as we develop and welcome the spiritual awakening the world will experience on 2012 according to the Mayan Calendar.”
