Video: Latino neural engineer sees a new future for paraplegics

LatinaLista — “People should not be imprisoned by their bodies.” That simple statement is the driving passion these days for neural engineer Dr. Justin C. Sanchez. Dr. Sanchez is the founder of the Miami-based Neuroprosthetic Research Group.

Dr. Sanchez and his colleagues want to revolutionize the connection between technology and humans by transitioning from the concept of ‘bionics’ to creating ‘sym-bionics.’ As a faculty member of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Dr. Sanchez foresees how sym-bionics takes technology a step further by not just enhancing human potential but actually interacts with the human brain to give people afflicted with paralysis the opportunity to control their own prosthetic devices.

In the featured video, Dr. Sanchez shares with a TEDx Conference audience in Miami the concept of sym-bionics and how the future of bionic technology is not only changing but providing more hope to people who thought they would never walk again.
