LatinaLista — On Monday, February 4, 2013, on what would have been her 100th birthday, the U.S. Postal Service released a stamp commemorating the Civil Rights pioneer, Rosa Parks.
While many schoolchildren have learned about the brave act of resistance that Ms. Parks exhibited challenging the racism and discrimination of her day, few have heard her describe it in her own words or who she was beyond that fateful day.
On an edition of Democracy Now!, the show examines Rosa Parks’ life with historian Jeanne Theoharis, author of the new book, “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks.”

Marisa, I was honored to have not only met Rosa Parks (The 1st Lady of the Civil Rights Movement) but had the privilege of doing the publicity campaign for her when she was a guest speaker at Soka University in Calabassas, California in December 1992. She spoke to a large throng who heard her unveil her trials and tribulations beginning on that historical day when she refused to give up her seat on a bus. Her story touched so many lives that evening.More exciting for me was at the private VIP reception that was held at Soka the evening before. I had the opportunity to discuss many issues. I was mesmerized. She had the most sweetest personality I have ever run across, as we even discussed our respective recipes for peach cobbler. Throughout my career as a broadcaster and publicist, I never had a more thrilling and enjoyable experience.Tu Amigo,Joe OrtizThe attached photo was taken at the reception.https://ac0ca5d8-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/joeortizassociates/photo-gallery/Rosa%20Parks.jpg?attachauth=ANoY7cpAg0UdFueZvyZSsk_seXA8SnUsz2GGo8hC1KkIZnixPG-i0EdioOmqKTqHa3HNBTgmwewuBxRKUhUqu0FJ2D40oEiJCKNIJlkyyMc6MKTt3mWjOVBH8YB15jjjPBw_uydx0qjljt4ov2WdIF8SxoPS7G-BvTR5WaSaia5bqFHzg7zwmscZra1Nr90O98eOPwPJjk5fLRXn0vByIOAqpkNl8QhAke-twPbGM1A7DvsG3iSRFZk%3D&attredirects=0 LA Times article of the event>> http://articles.latimes.com/1992-12-06/local/me-3539_1_bus-boycott
