White House kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month with livestream of Música Latina concert

LatinaLista —

(Editor's Note: The White House released a statement late on the day of the Música Latina performance (Sept. 16) that the concert will be postponed due to the tragic shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. The rescheduled date will be announced later.)

What would the start of Hispanic Heritage Month be without a fiesta at the White House?

President Obama and the First Lady will be clapping, foot-tapping, and dare we expect some shoulder shakes, as they welcome to the East Room of the White House tonight such well-known performers as Lila Downs, Gloria Estefan, Raul Malo, Ricky Martin, Prince Royce, Arturo Sandoval, Romeo Santos, Alejandro Sanz and Marco Antonio Solís.

From Cuban and Puerto Rican to Mexican and Spanish, the White House concert reflects the diversity that exists within the Latino community itself.

The concert is part of the 36-year-old PBS series IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE. In the old days, tonight's show, Música Latina, would have been videotaped for later showing. Yet, because the Internet allows for live viewing, that's what will happen.

The show will be livestreamed at 7 p.m. EST, tonight, from the White House. It will be broadcast later on PBS stations, in both English and Spanish, throughout the country on October 8 and then be released on PBS's website on October 9.

“Latin music has become a powerful force in the national culture, mirroring the growing size and importance of the Latino population in the United States,” said Sandie Viquez Pedlow, executive director of Latino Public Broadcasting.
