PENSACOLA, FL—Two Honduran advocates for the disabled spent time in Pensacola in September to meet with local groups concerning disability rights, therapy, and educational opportunities.
The visitors, both blind, were accompanied by their personal assistants and an interpreter provided by the U.S. Department of State. They are in the Gulf Coast on an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) by invitation of the U.S. Department of State.
They are also examining programs in Jackson, Wyoming, St. Louis, Missouri, and Washington, D.C., and their local program has been arranged by the Gulf Coast Citizen Diplomacy Council (GCCDC).
One of the visitors, Dayana Gissell Martinez Burke, is the first blind woman to be elected to the Honduran Congress. The other, Orlando Javier Salgado Rubi, promotes the social, cultural, and educational development of people with disabilities in Honduras through his ministry-level position as the Presidential Commissioner for Disability Affairs.
Both received an official welcome at Pensacola’s City Hall and then spent three days in meetings and site visits throughout Escambia County.
