LatinaLista — Today is a big day for Latina Lista. It’s the day that I officially launch the latest incarnation of what started out as a simple blog in 2004. Today, it’s a new layout, a new platform, a new look and a new tagline.
When I started Latina Lista, there were only a handful of Latino bloggers — even less women bloggers. It was a disparity that I had seen too often mirrored in newspaper news rooms. In newsrooms, usually white men dictated what was and was not news. In other words, these editors determined what kind of news appealed to a newspaper’s “core readers.” They didn’t, and some still don’t, consider Latinos to be their core readers.
So, in the beginning, my tagline — “Anything and Everything from a Latina Perspective” — served as much as a battle cry that it was time to let Latinas and Latinos join the mainstream national dialogue as it was a description of what readers would find on the site.
Thankfully, since then, Latina and Latino bloggers have charged into cyberspace creating more blogs, web sites and using social media than anyone in the mainstream believed we would. This change signaled it was time to do something a little different with a site that has become my alter ego, though when I speak or attend conferences, no one recognizes my name but they immediately know Latina Lista.
That’s exactly the way I want it.
I’ve always wanted Latina Lista to be known for what the name of the site has always implied — a smart, intelligent and wise online destination. “Lista” means those things and that’s what I’ve always tried to deliver at Latina Lista — smart content.
So today, Latina Lista has a new tagline — The Smart News Source. It has a redesigned web site that puts readers in control of the news on the site and how they want to read it, respond to it and discuss it. Most importantly, the new site allows greater flexibility for bringing more “smart news” content via original reporting, special collaborations and partnerships.
Our social media usage will be enhanced by using it in different ways to reach our readers but above all, readers will find an unparalleled online news destination at Latina Lista: The Smart News Source.
