LatinaLista — Going hungry is a real problem in the Latino community. The most recent United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) study (Nov. 2009) available documented that 29.4 percent of Latinos go hungry.
Seeing how the price of food has risen since then, it’s an educated guess that leads to the natural assumption that food insecurity is probably a bit worse with even more families these days.
And though there are food banks and other food programs available, research also shows that Latinos aren’t as likely to take advantage of them. That’s why a new initiative to specifically tackle Latino hunger is so important.
The campaign, No mas hambre (No more hunger), spearheaded by Latino Magazine:
…hopes to raise public awareness about hunger in the Latino community through their website; foster a national conversation about hunger in a NO+HAMBRE Summit to be held May 17, 2011 in Washington, DC; and mobilize Latinos to get involved through a national food drive.
As an added bonus, people who join No mas hambre get a free subscription to the magazine.
