Video for Thought: “Saber es Poder” — a powerfully simple but complex phrase

Ginetta Candelario, associate professor of Sociology and Latin American & Latina/o at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, declares “Saber es Poder” (Knowledge is Power). Dr. Candelario explains, the simple phrase varies in its meaning depending on its context. Yet, what remains constant is that knowledge is derived from education, whether it’s academic or from life experiences.

Dr. Candelario, a Brooklyn-born, New Jersey-bred Latina of Dominican and Italian heritage, explains the meaning of “sociological imagination” where the life of an individual is both the product and agent of history. In her presentation at TEDx, Dr. Candelario shares her own family history, her rise in academia and how everything in her life and her family history has brought her to the point where she now understands the full meanings of “saber es poder.”
