The GOP’s own contradiction is what alienates Latinos from thinking its their party

LatinaLista — Politico posted a piece entitled Biden: We’re ‘breaking our neck’ on immigration reform.

The piece isn’t all that interesting. It really just quotes Biden as reiterating why Latinos should vote for the Obama-Biden ticket — that an Obama-Biden win would send a clear message to the GOP that Democrats have Latino support and should wise up to join them in passing immigration reform.

The short piece doesn’t have anything that hasn’t been said a hundred times before but what is different is what can be found in the comments. As would be expected, the piece provoked people of both parties to respond. Yet, one who did respond did so in Spanish.

An obvious GOP supporter blasted the Spanish-speaker and wrote:

We talk English in this country! If you don’t like it get out!

That might have worked better had the Spanish-speaker not commented in support of Romney. Another Romney commenter translated the Spanish and added:

You just insulted a Romney voter. Many of us English speakers also speak Spanish.

This exchange exemplifies the fundamental problem that exists within today’s Republican Party. There is a contradiction within the GOP itself. The contradiction is ultra conservatives versus the rest of the party.

Ultra conservatives have no tolerance for those who know how to maintain their distinct cultural heritage while embracing what being American really means — patriotism to this country.

It is a sad commentary that people think not speaking English or being born here or still honoring cultural family traditions makes them less American.

On the contrary, it makes those people who think like that less human.

The racism of yesteryear has come full circle in our county and the Latino population knows it better than anyone.  The entire world embraced our choice of a black President four years ago and most nations still support him.  The fringe elements of bigotry have crept through into the mainstream once again with conservative mouthpieces planting the seeds of hate.  The only doubt lies here at home rooting from bigotry.  Watch the white hands paint Obama in Blackface at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/10/bamboozling-obama.html
