Video: 2.5 million children later, One Laptop Per Child is transforming not only children but whole countries

LatinaLista — In 2005, the acronym OLPC burst onto the tech/social good scene garnering headlines for its lofty mission — provide One Laptop Per Child to poor children throughout the world. Since that announcement, OLPC has put a special, break-proof laptop into the hands of 2.5 million children, in over 60 countries and in 21 languages.

The rugged, green and white link to the Internet has not only transformed the lives of children and their families but of whole countries. In 2007, Uruguay was the first country to commit to providing every child — disabled, healthy, mentally challenged — with a laptop of their own. Now, children are sporting OLPC laptops in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Miami, Florida, and that's just on this side of the planet.

In the featured TEDx lecture, Rodrigo Arboledo, chairman and CEO of One Laptop Per Child, shares the history and impressive gains of the OLPC program, and recognizing the change in technology, how OLPC is positioning itself for the future to still fulfill its mission by putting educational technology into the hands of the next generation.
