Chicago blogger creates Latino List recognizing everyday people doing amazing things

LatinaList — We have to hand it to our blogera, Esther Cepeda, over at 600words.com for doing something that is long overdue — and will probably be the first (we hope) of many more to come — a Latino List!

According to Esther:
“…nearly every time there’s any sort of Who’s Who/Mover-Shaker/One-to-Watch list in “mainstream” publications there are few, if any, Hispanics on it despite there being a ton of awesome Latinos doing truly amazing things here in Chicago.
So, in order to help blunt this perceived shortage of Latino superstars I decided to start one.”
Esther put out a call for nominations and received 120. She culled that list down and found ten men and women whom she felt warranted recognition in the first Chicago Latino List 2009.
The people she found and their stories are fascinating reads — like the reformed gang member who is now a bilingual funeral director and embalmer or the recent college graduate who has committed the next two years of his life to the Illinois Student Assistance Corp. teaching high school students in Rockford, Illinois, with a special emphasis on those students who will be the first in their families to go to college.
It’s clear Esther plans to make her list an annual celebration of heralding the accomplishments of everyday Latinas and Latinos in her city of Chicago.
The idea is so good that, as the saying goes — imitation is the best form of flattery! (hint, hint)
