LatinaLista — Among those in the Latino community who toil and sweat doing backbreaking work with very little recognition, appreciation or hope that their lives will improve are the migrant farmers.
Lately, we’ve heard a couple of success stories of former migrant laborers going on to unbelievable achievements — Jose Hernandez, the NASA astronaut and Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, a neurosurgeon and professor at Johns Hopkins University, and a researcher who is looking for a breakthrough in the treatment of brain cancer.
But these are the exceptions. Yet, that’s not to say that dreams don’t exist for migrant laborers. They do and a new movie aims to deliver to people exactly that message.
From Mexico with Love is a film about a poor migrant farm worker who faces off against a wealthy ranch owner’s son in the boxing ring.
The writers of the movie are very clear about saying that their intention with this film was to create a Mexican hero — not a Latino version of Rocky.
The (final) bout becomes a dramatic showdown between the racist ranchers and the masses of downtrodden farm workers, who see a victory in the ring as a chance to reclaim some of the dignity they’ve lost in the fields. Their hopes rest in the calloused hands of a young hero with something to prove.
The film opens nationwide on October 9 but because this film has such a powerful message, especially for young Latinos/as, the promoters have given Latina Lista tickets for the film’s screening in three cities.
If you live in either the greater Los Angeles and San Francisco areas or New York City and would be available on October 8 to see the film, I can email you 4 tickets per person or till I run out.
If you work for a non-profit that works with young Latinos, email me and we’ll see how many kids we can get to see this film.
