Video: Latino university musician shares how music made his life better

LatinaLista — Since junior high school, Rio Grande Valley, TX resident, Manuel Treviño, (no relation to author) has loved music, especially playing percussions. In high school, he saw upper-classmen playing snare drums and immediately knew that was what he wanted to play.

Unfortunately, he had no one to teach him. So, he taught himself and today he is in charge of keeping tempo for the percussion ensemble of the drum line at the University of Texas at Brownsville. In the featured video, Treviño shares how music changed his life and because of it how he wants to change the lives of the next generation.

If ever there was an argument to be made about the importance of keeping the arts in schools, Treviño, without even trying, serves as a great testament for it.
