GritoBlast! Google is synonymous with “search.” Whether it’s using it’s unmistakable search engine to find online information or news or using Google Earth to rediscover family roots, Google is using its tech expertise to foster a public curiosity about the world around us.
But with Google’s latest project (in beta), one could say it’s not just curiosity that the multi-tech company wants to arouse but cultural pride too. Touted to be one of the largest digital collections of US Latino art, culture and history to be ever curated online, Google is set to release, in its Google Arts & Culture section, the online exhibit “Latino Cultures in the US.”
A continual work in progress, the collection is a result of a collaboration with museums, universities and other cultural institutions. The online exhibit already features 2,500 new artworks and archives and 69 new exhibits ranging from notable and historic events, profiles of Latino and Latina personalities, one-on-one interviews with notable Latinx influencers, access to some of the greatest art masterpieces from paintings to murals, and vibrant images of all that represent the best of Latino culture: music, food, dance and literature.
“Now more than ever it’s important that we celebrate the culture, influence and experience of Latinos and their crucial role in the social fabric of the United States, blogged Laura Marquez, head of Google’s Latino Community Engagement.
In addition to the online exhibit, Google plans to publish a curriculum for students giving further insight into the collection — not just that they know where they came from but can go forward with even greater confidence.
