NORTHERN FLORIDA — The Pew Institute reports that Florida’s Latino population is the third-largest in the nation. More than 4.2 million Hispanics reside in Florida which make up 8% of all Hispanics in the United States. Of these, there are 2.1 million Latino eligible voters in Florida, and 10% of all U.S. Latino eligible voters. It’s no wonder that political candidates are trying to attract the Latino vote, and Latino voters are getting active.
Diana Carolina Bowman, a Colombian native, became a U.S. citizen on July 13, and says her father taught her to be politically active.
“My dad was politically active” she said. “We are from a small town and whenever there was an election in town, my dad would help. He and his friends would pass out campaign materials and I would join them.”
Bowman says that while studying for her citizenship test, she became keenly aware of what it means to be a U.S. citizen along with our responsibilities. Diana is now recruiting local Hispanics to join her and others for a Northwest Florida chapter of “Hispanics for Mitt.”
Her main purpose is to compile an email and telephone list of like-minded Hispanics in our area. Whenever there is a rally or a visit by the candidates, everyone can be notified quickly.

Likewise, Tabitha Frazier is working to increase unity among Hispanic voters in support of President Barack Obama and other candidates who share values of the Democratic Party.
Frazier, whose mother was born in Cuba, leads the Leon County Democratic Hispanic Caucus (LCDHC) which aims to foster Democratic ideals among residents in North Florida, especially Hispanics.
“We want to contribute to party leadership and organize to politically empower Hispanic communities across North Florida,” Frazier said.
